On 11 January 2018, Justice Michael Kirby delivered a Distinguished Public Lecture by on “Evolving Constitutional Democracies: An Indian and Australian Comparison”. Presiding over this lecture, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Supreme Court of India, also shared his remarks on India’s evolving constitutional law jurisprudent. The lecture was hosted at Indian Law Institute, New Delhi. Professor C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor, O. P. Jindal Global University, Professor Shaun Star, Executive Director of the Centre for India Australia Studies and Professor (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi also spoke on the topic. Justice Kirby’s lecture was delivered to a full house in the main auditorium of the Indian Law Institute. Kirby touched on issues of developing constitutionalism in Australia and compared these developments with the Indian context – he touched on important issues such as LGBTI rights, rights of indigenous populations and federalism and the separation of powers.
